There are 12 zones, and two acts to each zone. Each act has a boss battle at the end.

Once you've completed a full zone (so both acts), it saves, and you can resume from Act 1 of the next zone. But if you run out of lives in Act 2 of a zone, you'll see a Game Over screen and go back to Act 1 of the zone you were in.

It's a lot more forgiving than the old-school way, although there is also the option to play in a no-save mode.

Does this 'work' like an old Sonic game? Do you get lives or are there saves.

Apologies for the reddit-esque banality of this question; I guess I'm interested because of the nostalgia element of the game but also thinking about something like Spelunky where you start over each time like you used to in the olden days.

I bought it because I have a lot of nostalgia for the Mega Drive games. It's lovely, does exactly what I wanted it to.

However, I'm now stuck... on the fourth level (of twelve). I completed act one of the sky...thing, got Game Over on act 2, rinse repeat, and now I can't be arsed getting up to that point again. I don't have as much time as I used to, and I have a LOT more games than I ever did, so replaying the same level again and again to get to a point where I'll probably die anyway, isn't a main priority.

If you're not shit at games though, you'll get your money's worth.

Undertale... another one I really didn't 'get' when it first came out. Wondering if it'll be different if I get it on Vita, since there's a good chance my disinterest is linked to my lack of passion for gaming on PC.

I killed someone!

It was terribly exciting. He had a pistol; I had a shotgun. Then I was gunned down in turn as my 4x4 trundled weakly across a bridge. #30.

The consensus is that this actually seems to be a good game this time, not just a good Sonic game, but a good game. I'm planning to buy it after I finish Undertale.

Did anyone else buy into the rampant hype over this coming from reviews and take the plunge. I did, just now.

I'm not a fan of Sonic. I think the only Sonic game I've ever enjoyed is Colours on the Wii. I've never really enjoyed the uncomfortable mash of gameplay styles - running fast precludes exploring platform-based levels, but the platform-based levels require exploration in order to find stuff and Sonic moves terribly at anything less than mach speed which makes doing so rubbish. It just never worked for me.

I am, however, also an idiot that's easily convinced by other people's opinions on games and will often buy stuff I'm told I'll like, only to then not.

Sonic Mania actually seems good. From what I've played so far, anyway. Which isn't much. Hmm.

Anyone else got any better opinions, before I spend time playing past the first zone?

Internet restored, so to celebrate I had a go on a first-person server. Dropped in a quiet area; found level 2 body armour, a helmet, a backpack, and a crossbow; got run over by a car. #42.

Not sure how I feel about the movement in first person. It feels a bit floaty on first impressions, but maybe it's something I'd get used to. I don't think I've quite found the sweet spot on mouse sensitivity, either, though.

I dunno, the menu screen looks okay with everything on Ultra... [emoji14]

A second engineer callout (this time to our house, not just the exchange box thing) has determined that the problem with our internet is, in fact, a fucked modem. Spoke to the ISP again today, and they're fast-tracking a new one out, hopefully to arrive tomorrow. It's been 10 days already. Things are so bad I'm currently mooching WiFi in Tesco.

Really looking forward to getting back online and giving this a go.

Unless the PC is a monster, view distance to ultra, everything else to low. It looks like shit at any setting (indeed, arguably worse at high detail). You need performance at all costs.

I have now killed 3 people and came fourth once. To say the latter was one of the most tense gaming experiences I have ever had would be understating it.
