I was a bit disparaging about this yesterday in the PWB thread but it redeemed itself somewhat by (a) not outliving its welcome - it was shorter than I expected; and (b) having a surprisingly good ending. I think a second playthrough would probably reveal all sorts of hints and clues that I missed first time through, as the real purpose of the game kind of eluded me right to the very end.  Whether that's a great reveal or poor foreshadowing, I'm not sure.  But it was an enjoyable enough game, and if you're in the mood for some mellow block-puzzles any time soon then you've probably got this waiting for you thanks to PS+.

Monster Hunter World. It doesn't happen with many games but I've reached the point now where I'm perfectly happy to sit down and play this for entire evenings at a time without feeling that I'm trying to complete anything and without ever really getting impatient or bored with it. I've always got a little checklist of things I want to achieve, my level keeps ticking up steadily, there's a constant drip-feed of new things to do and it's just a really absorbing game that I'm nowhere near finished with yet.  A real solid gold classic, and possibly my favourite game of all time.

RiME. Forgettable Ico-alike that looks a bit like Wind Waker, rips off The Witness for some of its puzzle ideas, and plays like The Last Guardian without the cat-bird, including the nameless child protagonist and his wild flailing run. It misses most of the targets it sets for itself: it aims for enigmatic but lands somewhere around aimless, and the environment and architecture feels relentlessly gamelike rather than even beginning to approach TLG's immense sense of space. I'm halfway through the game now and I have no idea what the storyline is supposed to be or why I'm doing the things I'm doing - I'm pressing forward and solving puzzles because, well, there isn't much to do so I might as well do that. It's kind of calming and relaxing and not very difficult, so it's a good wind-down game, but I'll have forgotten it within days of finishing it I'm sure.

Pandemic Legacy. Board-games wise, we took a LONG break from this for various reasons (none of which were related to the game) but on picking it back up again over the rainy Easter weekend we've all become completely absorbed in it again and have played it four times in as many days.  I'm still amazed at the sheer cleverness of the whole thing, and the way it gently pushes you into making certain choices (ostensibly of your own volition) and then delights in pulling the rug from under you just as you think you're starting to get the hang of it.  It's an absolute masterpiece.

Want

I've been keeping an eye out for the Switch port of Hollow Knight but it seems to be running into some technical issues in the last stages of development so hopefully it'll be out soon (and not be a mess).

There's a big new patch for No Man's Sky incoming and as usual I'm promising myself that will be the point at which I finally start to play it.  We'll see, I guess.

I need to get some new board games, but not sure what's new and interesting right now.  Where's cav gone anyway?

Bin

I'm developing a love/hate relationship with Fire Emblem: Awakening - I absolutely love almost everything about it (the writing and characterisation is particularly superb) but the permadeath mechanic is doing my nut in, especially given the AI's tendency to ruthlessly dogpile your weakest characters whenever the opportunity arises.  Several times now I've lost a character on literally the last round of a long battle and been unable to resist the compulsion to reset and do it all over again.  It means I'm making very slow progress.  But the game's clearly balanced around this mechanic (it would be laughably easy if you could simply gloss over a few deaths each round) so I feel I need to persevere.  Not yet a Bin, but might yet aggravate me enough to tip it over the edge (of the bin).

I wasn’t talking about your characters.

The thought of the pair of you as the twin scourges of the seven seas greatly amuses me. I hope you regularly squabble over which one of you gets to call yourself Orangebeard.

OK so I've encountered Deviljho several times now and I've got to say he's a fantastic addition to the game.  It's just absolute chaos whenever he comes crashing in, grinning like a maniac and smashing shit up.  He's like a hyper-aggressive Barney the Dinosaur.  The first time I really crossed paths with him, he absolutely took apart a Bazelgeuse I was fighting, and anything that will do that is all right by me.

How do you pronounce his name though? This is bugging me. Is is Devil Joe? Devil Ho? Does it rhyme with Jose Mourinho?

Nice screenshots everyone.

What's the best way to get screenshots off of a PS4?  I'm guessing you need to copy them to USB rather than having any way to upload them directly?

I've got Trackmania but for some stupid reason I bought it on the Xbox One.  I'll happily set a few lap times on the PS4 version though.

Speaking of Xbox, though, their Games With Gold service next month is giving away The Witness and Assassin's Creed Syndicate, which makes the PS4 offerings look distinctly anaemic.

I'd settle for just "wanky" if they're short on space.

Thimbleweed Park

Glad this is over, in fact I had to push myself to finish it.  A great shame really, as I loved the old Lucasarts titles; but while this is a clear homage, it's not a very good game.  Nostalgia alone will carry you through the opening chapters but it's clear by the halfway point that Thimbleweed Park has serious issues: there's far too much back and forth and item-swapping, the team of five characters never actually interact with each other, the plot is absolute bullshit and the whole thing gets so wanky and self-referential by the end that I was glad to see the back of it.  It's just so inordinately pleased with itself all the way through that it never stops to consider that it's neither funny nor fun to play. What a shame.

I haven't even fought regular Deviljho yet! When I've been able to get on this week, I've been farming Vaal Hazek: those Fang+ drops are aggravatingly rare and I need loads of them.

He did crop up once when I was fighting something else in the forest so I have seen him thrashing around. I need to go find some tracks though to unlock his investigation I think.

Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood - Gar, the new FFXIV mode added last week is basically XI. It's a new region, there's no PF once you're in so people are shouting 'SAM lfg lv5', ads will aggro you to the ends of the earth and are much more dangerous than ads in the rest of the game, occasionally a Notorious Monster spawns that you kill for more exp and Lockboxes and if you die you can actually lose exp (the exp of the new mode that is).

Sound about right? :)

Oh god. What's this new mode called? I need to read up on this.

Do you want me to walk you through hacking it and slapping loads of games on there, Gar? I have the package I used (so, the hack software and a bunch of ROMs) which I can send to you digitally if you like...

That would be great. I've seen there are a few video guides out there but if you've actually done it and it works then that would presumably be the safest route.  There's nothing I'm desperate to get on there at the moment (though I'm sure there are some great games I've forgotten) but no harm in increasing my options.
