Invisible, Inc.

OK, so I only completed it on Beginner, but I'm absolutely having it anyway, because even on the easiest mode this game is a formidable challenge.  I had a few outright failures at the beginning while I got used to the game; then a full end-to-end run where I realised I wasn't in any way equipped to take on the ludicrously difficult final mission; then another run through that got me to the end in much better condition and even then it took me three goes at the final bit.

It's absolutely brilliant though.  Games these days are so often focused on scale and content, constantly distracting you with yet more things to see and places to go, that it makes a refreshing change to play something that basically goes "right, here's this difficult task, now you're going to go away and iterate on it until you get really really good at it".  Not that Invisible, Inc lacks variety - I've unlocked a whole bunch of new agents and toys that I'm itching to try out - but it's very sharp in its focus.  A handful of missions to build up your squad in any way you're able, then that absolute bastard of a final challenge to test out what you've gathered together.  It's the tensest, most enthralling turn-based game I've ever played, I think, and I'm absolutely going to dive back in and see what horrors await me on the next difficulty level up.

Additional to the above:

Rez Infinite

Rez is one of my favourite ever games but even so I balked at paying £25 for a game I'd already bought twice before, and I was hoping that the Xbox 360 version would become backwards compatible.  That hasn't happened (yet) so when this showed up in a sale at a more reasonable price then I decided to go for it.

It's still basically the same. The 4K remaster hasn't changed it in any way - it was always a unique-looking game and there still isn't anything that can match it.  I'd imagine it's pretty mind-blowing in VR but I don't have the opportunity to test that out.  Area 5 remains one of the best levels in any game ever.  The new portion, Area X, feels more like a proof of concept for a future Rez 2, as it doesn't quite play in the same way as the rest of the game and looks significantly better - it's not worth the price of admission on its own but it's nice to have new Rez to play after all these years.

Trophy percentages are odd though, Rez is neither particularly difficult nor very long (it's about an hour end-to-end) yet only about 35% of people who bought this have even seen area 5.  What a shame.

de Blob - Took somewhat longer than I expected, since I had to play the last two levels repeatedly to 100% them... that annoying thing where you've painted 99% of the level, but the missing thing is something really small you missed in an area that you can't revisit if you go too far. Only the last two levels have that, which is a bit shit in terms of game design. Done though, so that's another Platinum in the bank.

A big game, with more false endings than Return of the King.  Got there in the end though.  I'll post some detailed thoughts in the dedicated thread.

Cat Quest - Short, simple, a bit repetitive, but I really enjoyed it. Weird at the end, as it just seems to stop without ending; it leaves you in the world rather than showing credits or an end sequence and if you've already done everything at that point like I had, there's absolutely no reason to be there. Hmm. But yeah, decent enough.
Momodora: Reverie Under The Moonlight - Little pixel-based Metroidvania that's quite tough but good. Don't think I'll be going back for the one remaining trophy (there's no Platinum), because playing the whole thing on Insane difficulty feels like time better spent elsewhere. We'll see though.

Gorogoa - Well, that was short. And pretty! And clever! And relaxing. But mainly short. A nice little puzzle game with the emphasis on little... I can see why it's getting a fair bit of coverage right now but, equally, there are many other games that don't get anywhere near as much attention but are equally good. Indie fans are fickle.

Oure - No, it's definitely not the next Journey, despite what everyone on the indie sphere seems to think. It's very pretty, yes, and I can see the comparisons, but Journey wasn't a hideous 750-strong collect-'em-up finding tiny blue spheres in an otherwise entirely white cloudscape. The bosses are interesting for about three minutes each, the story is typically flaccid in its efforts to be whimsical and mysterious, and overall it's just a bit meh. Bah.
Far From Noise - Narrative thing. Wouldn't call it a game by any stretch of the imagination. God knows why it's in the BAFTA shortlisting, it's literally nothing. Wish I hadn't bothered now.

Hammerwatch - I really liked this on PC, but slogging through it on PS4 with a bit more effort makes me realise what a shallow Gauntlet-a-like it is. I mean, it's certainly not bad, but there's a lot of things that need fixing before it's genuinely good (especially vexing is how it wants you to collect 12 secret items before it'll show you the true ending, but doesn't keep track of how many you've got or let you go back for ones you've missed). Glad I did it, but doubt I'll bother going for the Platinum.

That was... shorter than I expected.  At least in terms of beating the main story.  However I've collected a fraction of the moons so far to get to this point and it's clearly still unlocking new stuff post-game so I suspect there's a lot more to see yet.

I managed to finish it with about 400 moons and that's only just over halfway. There's loads more to do, so don't stop yet... :)
