This is the only thing that impressed me from that extremely underwhelming Sony conference (I'm not sold on GoW yet :/).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDS-w29MqeE

Whoa.  :o

That's quite the graphical leap from the latest version, which I believe IS the version the Switch is getting, not only that, the new features sound very exciting for a MH fan indeed.

Sounds like it's going to be shit loads more organic, but if the meat skewer part of the trailer is any indication, it's still going toh ave some of the charm of the series, only know everything will be fluid as fuck.

I hope this is an actual proper MH game though and not some dumbed down attempt to appeal to the Western market.

Never mind though. With two new Monster Hunter games and two new Metroid games on the way, it's been a good E3.

The beta for this is running this weekend and is available to all PS+ subscribers, so anyone who's even vaguely interested should give it a whirl.

Very early impressions: it looks absolutely gorgeous on the PS4 Pro, it's got a bit more hand-holding this time around - mostly in the form of Scout Flies who highlight points of interest and help you track the monster (not sure if you will be able to disable these in the final game), and it's absolutely Monster Hunter through and through in all its clunky, unintuitive glory. The weapons, moves, controls and general gameplay are all the same as they've ever been. I'm pretty happy.

I can't fucking believe how big a jump this is from MH4, there's no zones, it's madness! No more fighting a monstern ear one and getting tail slapped into another area! It looks stunning, and the ecology of the world looks there, it's more immersive and less gamey imo. I'm still getting used to it but so far thisi s incredible.

And whilst I hope High Rank/G Rank does have no hand holding, I'm fine with the demo's level of hand holding atm, if it gets people into Monster Hunter (something that the game did itself no favours on usually) all theb etter.

So it looks like this is selling very well. Is this the entry that finally wins everyone over to Monster Hunter?

I hope it is in many ways because it's one of the truly great gaming series and this entry isn't anything like as much of a departure as I originally expected.  Zones are now continuous rather than forcing loading in between, and there's been some useful streamlining in terms of things like auto-crafting and inventory management, but it's still the same old Monster Hunter. The same weapons, the same convoluted systems, the same giant monsters... it's all there.  And it's bloody glorious.

It has a terrible start, mind. They've tried to make it "accessible" by having an opening mission featuring a couple of characters shouting "go here!" and "do this!" and "hurry up!" at you while introducing you to the basic controls.  But soon enough you get to the main hub and it's all just the same as it ever was.  My advice to anyone trying this is just blast through the first couple of missions until you start to work out what's what, and then explore the main hub and work out what's going on.

My only issue so far is that online was such a clusterfuck to figureout at first, but I farmed monsters all night yesterday with a friend, so it's good now.

Yeah, how DOES the online work?

If I’m playing solo and I want to send up a flare to bring other people in, what do I do? Do I need to have started a 4-player quest initially or can I call in the cavalry for a 1-player quest?

Who are the 16 people in my lobby? Are they the only people I can party with?

What’s the best way of just finding a bunch of folk who are farming a specific monster? This used to be quite straightforward in the earlier games.

I like the look of the little cat guys, but I honestly can't say that any other aspect of this really appeals to me; it sounds like nothing but grind, I think the monster design is silly and the graphics are horribly plastic-looking.

And yet I'm still tempted to get it, just because so many people are playing it.

It’s great, I mean really great, but in exactly the same way the series has always been. A minor graphical tart-up doesn’t disguise the fact that it’s Monster Hunter through and through, in all its obtuse glory. If you’ve bounced off the series before, you likely will again.

I don't know about randos but playing with friends is as simple as inviting them from the in game menu and posting a quest/joing a quest, I'll look into specific Monster farming tomorrow.

Fuck that last boss, he has too much health. Never do it without co-op if you want to farm it. >:(

Did you enjoy Kushala's Fun House of Tornados Everywhere?

Kushala was a bit of an irritant but Teostra was the big hurdle for me. I spent ages making an armour set with full fire resistance and maximum water damage and still struggled. Such a good feeling when he finally went down though.

I can desl with Teo but if Kushala and Nergigante manage to limp off to their lairs where they get absolutely crazy (Nergi starts spamming his dive, Kushala puts up multiple simultaneous walls of hurricanes everywhere) I cry. That's why I flash the shit out of them when I see them limp asap but sometimes you dont make it. ;;

I will say, Teo surrounded by a sea of fire and lava explosions in his lair and Kushala silhouetted agsinst his 'fuck you if you have motion sickness' tornados looks stunning.

We can all agree on Vaal's gimmick being fucking annoying too, right? The only thing about him thats a problem.

Moved the last few posts from the Games Completed to the Monster Hunter thread.

The last boss was a bit anticlimactic I thought, mostly because

(click to show/hide)

Anyway, I've done him twice now, and Zorah Magdaros about eight times, which has got me the best Blast hammer available at the moment and I never want to see either of those ever again.

Have you done the Ryu event quest yet? I did it once and got a single ticket, do I really need to do the quest seven times to craft the outfit set?
