Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp
« Topic Start: October 25, 2017, 02:59:28 PM »
I caved and downloaded the Android version from Australia. Works fine, just as the early version of Miitomo did. Seems good. It's Animal Crossing. I doubt I'll get anything done now for the foreseeable future. :)

I am not ready for that bastard Tom Nook extracting actual cash from me in the form of microtransactions.

See, that's the thing - having played Animal Crossing for what appears to be years, I'm totally patient. The Leaf Tokens give people who want a mobile experience the opportunity to speed things up, but... well. If you're an AC player, where's the rush? I'm happy to wait three days for Cyrus to finish building a shed or whatever it is I told him to put up. Aside from the single 'Starter Pack' that offers a few goodies for 99p*, I suspect I'll be able to avoid the micro-transactions here entirely.

* I don't mind dropping a quid on a game I know is going to be played for a very, very long time.

Oh god, I've had to forcibly stop myself playing this. Got up, sat at my laptop to do work at 9am, turned on my phone and then it was 10.30am and I'd done fuck all apart from collect fruit and give fish to a squirrel. Good lord.

Yep. Out at the end of November, but it's already available in Australia so I 'got' the game. There was a Direct video about it the other day... tried to post it here but it doesn't work, so you can see it here instead.

Welcome to my world.

I'm trying not to play it too much right now, because I know I'm going to have to start over anyway - there are time-limited bonuses which start ticking down from the second you start playing and I can't claim until I have it officially, and you currently can't link Nintendo Accounts to it if they're not based in Australia (which comes with its own bonuses). No point investing too much time now if I know I'll have to start from scratch in a few weeks...

But yeah, it's horribly addictive busywork. Damn it.

... aaaaaaaand the forced update this morning appears to have wiped my save. Bugger. Guess I'm starting over then.

EDIT: No, wait! It downloaded a save from some online backup and I'm back where I was. Weird. But now I'm official, so that's nice. Anyone else playing?

I'm probably going to be able to guess the answer to this, but does it require an always-on Internet connection?

Given the number of connection errors I had this morning when everyone was bashing it at once, I'd say so.

Of course it uses an 11-digit code instead of the nickname it makes you choose.

Played a little bit so far, but not sure how long it's likely to stay installed; it seems fine?, but Animal Crossing was never really my thing, and mobile games of any stripe tend not to hold my interest very long.

In the specific case of Animal Crossing, I don't have a problem with that - the idea is that you're playing as you, and a lot of players I've seen have real names. How many people in the world are called Amy, or Kate, or John? Couldn't have that. Being gh@stfacekilla69 wouldn't exactly be in keeping with the AC style.

Yeah, maybe. Any random players I've come across so far have had names in Japanese.
