Title: Play Want Bin - Septum Piercing
Post by: Garwoofoo on September 09, 2017, 04:45:05 AM
Bit late this month, sorry about that.  Now I know all you cool kids will be like PLAY: Destiny 2! BIN: Destiny 1! but as usual I'm playing a load of weird stuff no-one else is so at least I've got something to talk about.

Play

Slime Rancher.  I think this is a really great game, a proper overlooked gem of a title.  It's got elements of Stardew Valley (building up a ranch, populating it with slimes and maximising your profits) mixed with a bit of Minecraft (exploring your local area and gathering resources).  It's really gentle and undemanding to play but just when you think it's really simple and there's not much to it, additional layers of complexity unfold and there's actually far more to it than meets the eye.  It's adorable too.

Everybody's Golf.  Which is, oddly enough, almost identical to every other Everybody's Golf game.  In single-player mode at least it's the same slow grind through tournament matches and versus players to unlock different courses, and it plays much the same as previous instalments, so right now I'm not getting much out of this that I haven't already seen in, say, the Vita version.  There's more to it once you venture online so maybe that's where the fun really lies - and I am enjoying it a lot, so there's that - but somehow I expected more innovation than I've seen so far.  I also admire its dedication to using all the latest graphical techniques - I'm playing in native 4K with HDR - yet still looking basically terrible.  You've got to respect that.

Want

Starting to get hyped now for Assassin's Creed: Origins which is looking pretty tremendous.  As a fan of the series I'm pretty much guaranteed to be day one on this one, though I'm a bit wary that it'll be buggy initially as all new-gen AC games tend to be.

Still want to get the Final Fantasy XII remaster too.

That Mario & Rabbids thing looks pretty good.  That's two games I want on the Switch now.  It's getting there.

Bin

I think I'll probably put Grand Kingdom on ice.  It's good, but it requires huge amounts of time to get anywhere and doesn't really deliver the kind of rewards you'd expect from that kind of dedication.  Strangely enough it's the kind of game I wish I had on my phone - it suits regular play sessions very well - but as it stands I think I can probably use my time more productively.

As predicted, Destiny 2. Not impressed with the story so far, but I only settled into the first one after I'd finished the story and had the daily ritual of strikes and story missions. At low levels with crap equipment, and lacking that comfortable familiarity, it's a bit pedestrian. That said, it's still Destiny with the same satisfying shooting and movement, which is enough for now.

Lacking the time for XCOM 2 (and the money for its expansion, War of the Chosen), I'm really glad for Mario+Rabbids to give me that strategy kick. I'm worried that going back to XCOM's fiddly shot percentages and limited turn options is going to be difficult after a game that lets me slide tackle through two enemies, slip through a pipe to the other side of the map, combo jump off a squadmate onto a third opponent, then still take a shot and activate overwatch. And then use my other two characters.

Want
Despite all that, I've got my eye on War of the Chosen - sated slightly by watching Matt Lees' new playthrough videos which let me visit it vicariously.

Bin
Last-minute business decisions that drop months' worth of work into my schedule with a deadline three weeks away.

Destiny 2 - Novelty has kinda' wore off, shooting feels solid but it just kinda' feels like a less fun version of Borderlands 2 so far, I hear the true strength lies in the endgame though, so I'll stick around.

Stormblood - I beat the current raid with my static, static drama happened, I now have no static :( (drama is still carrying on on as of today too, and I'm tired since I'm stuck in the middle). And soon we'll get two new fights and the upcoming Ultimate difficulty raid which is apparently Bahamut (Final Coil raid end boss), Twintania (Binding Coil raid boss) and Nael van Darnus (Second Coil raid end boss) all at the same time so good luck doing that with pugs, future me.

Undertale - Near the end, it's great and one of the best RPGs I've ever played.

Final Fantasy XII HD - Taking it slowly, since I want to do everything. Only did a few more hunts last night then ventured into the Ridorina Cataracts which IIRC is one mega long super story dungeon. The faux-MMO nature of this game and the combat makes it quite a chill game to play actually.

Want

The Legend of Korra game that Platinum made - Watching the second series of Korra at the moment, it's awesome and the game always looked like a great Budget Platinum game, one thing I'm impressed the most by is how they seem to have got her fighting animations spot on, if the game has a parry I'll lose my shit. (Also, Korra is awesome tbh)

Good god, I finally remembered my password for the Soc! :)

PLAY
PinOut - My current phone obsession, because I'm pinball mad and this is lovely.
LEGO Dimensions - Determined to 100% this. I now own all the figures (ALL OF THEM), except the ones out this Friday... but I have enough trade-in credit at GAME/CEX to have those immediately too. Making progress, though I'll be here a while...
Pokémon GO - Nearly got a complete Gen1 'dex (bar FarFetch'd and Tauros, the region-locked bastards) and raids are keeping me and the family playing together still, which is nice.

WANT
Pinball FX3 - Can't wait for this in a few weeks, especially as the majority of the tables from Zen Pinball 2 carry over.
South Park: Phone Destroyer - Heard good things about this, so I'm in.
Motivation to play Switch - I've not picked up my Switch in a while. I should, because I still haven't finished Zelda or even remotely started Splatoon 2.

BIN
Magikarp Jump - Done, not going back. Fun while it lasted though, as mindless as it was.

Additional Play: Horizon Zero Dawn - haven't got far enough to really comment on the game but my god this game is pretty.  It's like a generational leap over most of the stuff on the PS4 Pro, cheerfully chugging along in (checkerboard) 4K and with the best implementation of HDR I've seen on anything (movies, games, whatever).  Just lovely to look at.  So far the game itself seems fairly generic but I like the setting and the intro was good so I'm fairly hopeful this will be fun.

The plot took a while to grab me, but I think I've said elsewhere, I'm still thinking about bits of it.

I want to go back and NG+ it on Ultra Hard, just to see if I can.

I keep wondering if I should get it. It's one of very few games that I have any interest in just now. I certainly like what I've seen of it.

A bit further in and I have to say Horizon Zero Dawn isn't really grabbing me, and I'm not at all sure why.  Everything in it is really good - it's got an interesting setting, decent characters, a varied combat system, a big open world and it looks incredible - but somehow it's not coming together.  I've seen it described elsewhere as "Modern Games: The Game" and perhaps that's part of the problem?  It's got everything you'd expect in there but none of it feels inspired and very little of it feels truly necessary.  The crafting in particular just seems to be a way to get the player to spend more time in menus, and I'm starting to groan every time I see a Mass Effect-style dialogue wheel with 15 earnest questions I need to ask every NPC in turn before I feel like I can move on.  When I'm watching the (lengthy) cut-scenes I'm wishing I had more control.  When I'm trundling around the open world, I'm wishing I had more direction.

I'm a few hours in, just out of the starting area (met my first Tallneck and found my first Trial) and I'm kind of tempted to shelve it.  Does it suddenly open up past this point or have I seen enough to get a flavour of what it is?  If it's like this all the way through then I've probably had enough.

You're having the exact same reaction I did. (I found it helped a little to turn off most of the HUD markers, because Jesus (https://twitter.com/aniki21/status/838864738591334401).)

I ended up playing it a bunch more out of some kind of obligation and, like you say, it's a very well-crafted game - but I ended up dropping it (I assume) long before the end. I don't feel like it got different, so much as it just got more. More weapons that fire more types of ammo at more robo-dinos who drop more resources to craft more armour and more items. It's loops on loops on loops, and none of them weighty enough to be particularly satisfying.

Ah, I thought that might be the case.  Thanks for confirming.

It's interesting because I picked up Xenoblade Chronicles on the 3DS the other day and although it's an RPG, it's got a lot in common with HZD, from its open world to its resource collection.  Game genres are definitely merging these days. I'm also enjoying it far, far more.  It obviously lacks HZD's graphical splendour (as an ugly Wii game ported to an underpowered handheld, "it's as good as you'd expect" is about all I can say about it) but everything else is just... better.  The pacing's better, the plot's more interesting, there are always a hundred things to be thinking about, the battle system is really involved and there's genuine wit and banter between the main cast.  I'm genuinely caught up in its strange little world in a way that Horizon never managed.  So maybe I should just play that one instead.

The other day when I said I was considering buying Horizon, I soon thought to myself, "Maybe I should actually finish Xenoblade instead." I've got my Wii plugged in too.

XC is great, monster of game, faux-MMO filled to the brim with tiny conveniences that make it more fun to play, save anytime anywhere, fast travel, change time of day when needed, fetch quests auto complete before the 'return to Quest giver' part.

I don't remember when exactly HZD clicked with me; I think it was when I got to the Carja lands, or thereabouts.

I also don't remember ever spending a lot of time in menus crafting... certainly I made a lot of arrows, but that was all from the weapon wheel. The economy in general is garbage, though; hunting down fish skin or raccoon bone or whatever was a bit of a drag, and it never seemed to make sense for what it was I was making.

Dunno, I really loved it by the end. The Carja plot isn't hugely interesting, but the backstory stuff - the Zero Dawn plot - is something I still think about almost daily.

Play I bought Star Wars Battlefront in the PSN sale and then also downloaded Overwatch for the freeplay weekend. I’ve been playing a lot of Battlefront. In my limited experience of playing a couple of online shooters obsessively; it’s pretty shallow but, to me at least, that’s one of the main reasons I’m enjoying it.

There’s not an awful lot to learn and after that it’s just a lot of running around pew-pewing Star Wars action figures. Haven’t played many of the massive 40 player game maps but the 8/10/12 player games are scratching the bit of my brain that enjoys this sort of thing. Also the Star Wars part of my brain, the music and sound effects are particularly effective.

Overwatch is too complicated for me, I could tell from a couple of games that it requires investment to get to grips with different play styles and catch up with the community which I can’t really justify.

Want I’m up for this Fortnite battle royale thing that’s going free to play tomorrow. Hadn’t really heard much about the game before the announcement. Like everyone else without a PC I’ve been keeping up with PUBG via the Youtubes etc. so keen to play something similar.

Crafting in Horizon is in this weird place where they obviously, at one point, wanted it to be really deep and interesting (there's no other sensible explanation for the sheer number of different bits to collect) but then later decided it shouldn't be something you have to spend lots of time on. Which results in this situation where you can craft essentially infinite arrows, bombs and other consumables, instantly, in a pop-up menu, while legging it from a 400-foot mechanical tyrannosaurus - but finding the specific squirrel kidney you need for a new shirt takes hours of tedious hunting.

It feels like a game where no idea was ever actually thrown away, just reduced down until it would fit into the schedule.

Yeah. I actually played Xenoblade Chronicles a bit when it came out on the Wii and really enjoyed it, but going back to it now it's even better than I remembered.  All the little side quests really help to fill out the world and make it feel alive, and it's fantastic to have a game of this kind of scope and complexity on a handheld.  I even like the hilarious voice acting.

The 3DS is such an odd little machine at this stage in its life, it's always felt a bit archaic and it's incredibly uncomfortable to hold for long periods but it's quietly built up an incredible library of games, especially if you're into RPGs. I'm starting to realise that I've only just scratched the surface of what it's got available despite owning one almost since launch. Dragon Quest, SMT, Fire Emblem, Xenoblade, Bravely Default, Rune Factory...  I'm sure Alastor will remind me of a dozen others I've forgotten.  I think I need to buy a grip for the thing so I can actually use it for more than an hour without hand cramps.

Additional PLAY:

Stealth Inc - Been sitting on my Vita forever, never really touched it, now ploughing through it. Up to the last world already, it's rather good in a bitesize way. Some annoyances, like the way it pits you to beat a set time for the best rank and yet has some places where the AI's detection is totally random, meaning you're playing those levels repeatedly just to hopefully manage both at once. Otherwise though, pretty decent.

Tearaway Unfolded - Platinum'd the Vita one, but this feels different enough to be worth going through... plus, I've forgotten the original anyway so it's basically a fresh experience. Playing on and off just because.

Additional PLAY:

RUINER - Seen a few reviews saying that this is spoiled by being too bleak and dystopian, but it's right up my street so far. A twin-stick shooter with cyberpunk aesthetic was always going to be my thing anyway, but it's really, really good too. Only problem is, I suck at it. Granted, I put it on Hard right away because I don't have time to be playing things twice for trophies, but I died 35 times in the tutorial alone. Should make for an interesting experience, if nothing else...

Pinball FX3 - HOO BOY, PINBALL. I loves me some pinball. And considering pretty much all the tables from Zen Pinball 2 import into it for free, I'm very happy. Time to start setting some new leaderboard scores...

Want I’m up for this Fortnite battle royale thing that’s going free to play tomorrow.

So... I played a couple of rounds of this today. It seems pretty good. It's not as cartoonish as it looks. So far the main negative seems to be that the map is always the same, same weapon drops in the same houses/sheds. I'm guessing it's not like this in PUBG.

Other than that I was having a great time with it. Shooting is satisfying, controls are fairly intuitive (although I've pulled up the build option a couple of times in one-to-one encounters because I'm a bumbling idiot under pressure), and it looks kind of nice. Looking forward to playing more, so far 16th is my highest placing. Oh, and it has a nice feature where you can watch the match play out which seems cool.

Additional PLAY:

SNES Mini - I'm determined to not make this a waste of money, so I'll be playing through everything in turn. First up is my favourite SNES game of all time, Super Castlevania IV; didn't do too bad, got to stage 4 off muscle memory alone, so will plug away. Not surprisingly though, I'm waiting until the inevitable day when it's hacked and I can put all the SNES games on there. Then all bets are off. :D

Picross S - Cracked and grabbed this one immediately, because I love Picross. It's pretty much as you'd expect, but they've made the baffling decision to not allow touchscreen interaction. God knows why because after years of Picross on 3DS, it doesn't feel right playing it with buttons alone. Nevertheless, Picross. Nice.

I uploaded about 300 SNES games to my Ouya the other day and I'm happy to say they are flawless on the machine.

Yeah, but... Ouya. :P

Additional PLAY:

Golf Story - Tried really hard, but couldn't resist this in the end because all the reviews of it are glowing. It's Mario Golf on the Game Boy Color! Which is to say, it's a golf game mixed with an RPG, meaning there's more to do than just play rounds of golf. That you can drop the ball at ANY point and hit is pretty interesting, as some good things can happen if you're hitting balls at them. Plus, the golf itself is pretty damn good too. Loving this, it's annoyingly the game that's got me playing more Switch than I have in a long while.

Just completed Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, over 10 years ago, I didn't like this game very much, faux-MMO combat (and then I went on much later to become utterly enslaved to the actual MMO Final Fantasy), too long (it isn't) and grindy (I don't remember ever grinding in this version), badly paced (everything I thought was strung out, wasn't) and a confusing story (Now I love all that politics shit!) but I persevered and beat it, I found this so satisfying that I wanted to play and beat the other Final Fantasy games which was at the time for me, pretty daunting because like most people I'd had only previous beat the PS1 games.

I think I had the only rule that I didn't need to play spin offs (yet I still did) and XI because I literally couldn't sustain a subscription to an MMO back then, so off I went and got FFX the next day (The game that would go on to be my favourite besides XIV). I dunno' if anyone on here remembers my 'Final Fantasy Pilgrimage' but I did eventually end up beating every game that wasn't XI (ending on Final Fantasy I because I'm a dork) but I somehow feel as if beating FFXII again, the game that made me experience one of the longest running, varied RPG's out there that I've somehow come full circle? T_T

Also, I thoroughly enjoyed FFXII this time, in fact I'm not even done with it. I will go back to do all the Espers and all the hunts, eventually hoping to kill Yiazmat, a boss with so much HP you can save the game midway through the fight and come back! It's in many ways, a faux-MMO FF game with a Star Wars flavour to it and I dislike neither of those things.  :)
