Once I finish the construction of the Atari SX2600 ( nearly done now, I'm down to cosmetics and modding a pair of paddles ) I intend to upload the entire construction to instructables.com and link back to here as a place to discuss the build. Hopefully that will bring some new blood.

I'm not against rebranding this place as simply 'The Society'.  Do we even have the old forum skin anymore?

Without the bespoke Victorian window-dressing we can look a bit irony-free.

The Society is a little vague/creepy. The Society of Gamesplaying would do though.

I think if you drop the "Gentlemen and Womenfolk", it loses some of the olde world-y charm. "Society of Gamesplaying" sounds a little pretentious to me.

EDIT: Getting back the old skin would be great, though.  I miss it. :(

I think that, with the old skin or similar in place, the name wouldn't seem so bizarre. We need the Victorian trappings for the "Gentlemen and Womenfolk" to fit in, because then it's obviously part of the overall style of the forum.

Is this white knight week?

Why don't we ask our large female membership what they think?

But if you're determined, why not The Society of Gamesplaying Gentlemen and Ladies (or Ladies and Gentlemen. Or put put Ladies in capital letters just to show we're progressive. Perhaps highlight we're lesbian, bi and gay friendly too, just in case people aren't joining because of that).

There's always Gentlefolk, I suppose? That wouldn't make us sound like a hippy commune at all...

Or Pirate Ninja Assassins. The Society of Gamesplaying Pirate Ninja Assassins has a nice ring to it.

More generally though - all videogame forums are dying. I had a topic about it once and everyone got cross. But active membership numbers have been declining for ages everywhere - by the nature of the hobby it's connected and techy, so people are just switching to other ways of keeping informed and sharing opinions. Why type stuff back and forth to feltmonkey when you can read tweets direct from game creators?

We've had this discussion before - either we're happy being 15 or so old farts talking about videogames for the next 30 years until we die one by one from diabetes, or we try to expand out the brand a bit and push our unique brand of wordy, informed, British gibberish to a wider audience. Considering we can't even arrange an online meet any more I suspect the former path is the one we'll take.

I was gonna poke around and see if I could dig up something along the lines of the old skin. I need to get an install of PHPBB running first and then muck around. Give me a couple of years.

Why not just call The Society "God dammit feltmonkey"? Works for me.

Unless that was your joke. If so, it still works for me.

I actually think "The Society of Gamesplaying Gentlefolk" is an improvement, but I agree we need more beige.  We might not be able to get the old skin back in its entirety, but surely a colour change and a reinstatement of the title banner might go some way to restoring our identity?

I haven't seen the old brown skin for years - I used to stick it on neutral blue so I could get away with reading it at work.

I actually think "The Society of Gamesplaying Gentlefolk" is an improvement...

I couldn't decide if I was being serious about that suggestion even as I was actually suggesting it. Probably not, knowing me.

If everyone likes it you can have it though, for a small fee...
