Looks suspiciously like another Uncharted style world... but hey, any new Mass Effect stuff is OK by me. The race apparently is an important one if you've read the novel.

I haven't.

Batarians, non? I've not read the novel, but they look like the codex entries for that race.

I am unfeasibly excited. Does anyone know what's actually going on with the planned trilogy?

Is the book any good?

And should it be read before or after playing the game?

Ohhhh yes. I think I'll start it again when the DLC comes.

Or just now, I'm not sure.

A quick question for those that have played Mass Effect.

I haven't started it yet, but intend to do so shortly. Should I get the DLC before I start (ie does it integrate with the main game and enhance it) or should I wait until later (ie is it "extra" stuff to do after the main game is complete)?

I've avoided too much info on this for fear of spoilers so a straightforward "now" or "later" answer would suffice. Thanks. smile.gif

Later. Though there is a trigger point we can tell you about (if you want to know) that after which you wouldn't be able to access it on your first playthrough (though you can restart with the same character).

In all honesty, if you want to enjoy Mass Effect to the fullest, stick to the main story as much as possible, and don't worry about this or any other of the crap sidequests. Then play it through again mopping up everything.

I like the idea of an extra 90minutes of play time. My Mass Effect experience went too fast despite trawling the Galaxy through two plays. Still I'm not complaining as I love this game.

Just thought that I should pop in and say that a PC port of Mass Effect has been announced, a PS3 port is expected within the year and EA has said this will be a 'long term' francise.

And it was doing so well.

I'm thinking of trading my 360 copy in and putting the money towards the PC game in May. I can't imagine the game being much better once the framerate is sorted. More story is always welcome though, so long may it continue as far as I'm concerned.

that was the first thing i thought, too. we'll have a character in the next game voiced by Dennis Rodman, and DJ Fuckwit on the wheels of steel. at least the customisable sodomy should be improved - EA have great experience in the field of fucking stuff up the arse. i mean, look at Burnout.

Is this the official Mass Effect thread? It is now.

I started this a couple of nights ago, and had my first proper session last night. It's absolutely captivating, isn't it? Time just flew by and it seems like so much thought has been put into even the most incidental details.

Its KOTOR heritage is very clear, and I'm surprised to see that it suffers from virtually all the same technical problems (long loading times, small areas, dodgy frame rate, texture pop in, a main character that runs like he's shat himself) as the earlier game. But somehow it doesn't matter at all. It's amazing what difference a quality script and some decent voice acting can make.

The game was always going to be a trilogy anyways so I wouldn't be worried about EA's influence on Bioware just yet. I enjoyed the DLC alot though have only played through it once. Theres some stronger weapons availible there as well as some nice optional choice selections to play with your morality.

Hnnnghh. I'm starting to develop a real love-hate relationship with Mass Effect, and I've just turned it off in sheer frustration.

I'm still quite near the start of the game:

I'm having real trouble with the combat (playing as a Vanguard). My colleagues get cut down in seconds every time and I can't seem to stay alive long enough to make much of a dent in the enemy. Not a problem, as I assume it's just a learning curve.... but every time I die, the game makes me sit through the same two-to-three minute cut scene, complete with dialogue boxes. I've seen it eight times now and it's driving me insane.

Is there any way to skip the cut scenes? Because I can't handle forty hours of this bollocks. I absolutely love the game's setting and atmosphere, I'm willing to persevere with the combat, but unskippable story sequences on auto-repeat will drive me bonkers. If the game continues like this all the way through, I might as well just give up now.

Combat gets exponentially easier as you go on. You do seem to be severely underpowered to start with (I had trouble with the same bit, and one other in the first few hours), but once you've unlocked a few biotic/tech powers and beefier weapons, it slots into place. Persevere!
